How your German net salary is calculated

Two kinds of deductions come off your gross pay: taxes and social security contributions. Social contributions are usually split 50/50 between you and your employer.

  • Income tax (Lohnsteuer): based on the 2026 tax rates with a tax-free allowance of €12,348 per year.
  • Solidarity surcharge: 5.5 % of income tax, but only for high earners (exemption limit: €20,350 income tax per year).
  • Church tax: 8 % of income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, 9 % elsewhere – only if you are a registered church member.
  • Health insurance: 14.6 % plus an additional rate (2026 average: 2.9 %), half paid by you.
  • Long-term care insurance: 3.6 %, your share 1.8 % (2.3 % in Saxony). Childless employees aged 23+ pay 0.6 points more.
  • Pension insurance: 18.6 %, your share 9.3 %.
  • Unemployment insurance: 2.6 %, your share 1.3 %.
