How the German state pension is calculated

The simplified pension formula is: pension points × access factor × current pension value.

  • Pension points: earning exactly the average salary for one year gives one point. The provisional average for 2026 is €51,944 per year.
  • Pension value: since 1 July 2026, one point is worth €42.52 of monthly pension (previously €40.79).
  • Access factor: retiring early costs 0.3 % per month (max. 14.4 %); retiring later adds 0.5 % per month.

What is deducted from the pension?

  • Health insurance: 7.3 % plus half the additional rate
  • Long-term care: the full 3.6 % (4.2 % if childless)
  • Income tax: for pensions starting in 2026, 84 % of the pension is taxable – whether you actually pay tax depends on your total income.
